Tax Planning

Fee-Only Financial Planning for High-Income Families and Commercial Real Estate Executives

Tax planning is the work we do with you before the year ends, while there's still time to change the outcome. Tax preparation reports what already happened. We look at how your income is structured, where your investments sit, and when the big events land, then work with your CPA so the plan and the return agree. We don't prepare returns.

Here's the frustrating part about taxes: by the time your CPA is preparing the return, almost every decision that mattered has already been made. Which entity the income ran through. Which account held the investment that got sold. Whether that big charitable gift went out in December or January. Tax planning is the work that happens earlier, while those choices are still open. Over a career, we'd argue it's worth more than the return itself.

Florida has no state income tax, which is wonderful and also a little sneaky. It takes one lever off the table, so the federal levers matter more: brackets, holding periods, where each asset lives, and the timing of a closing or a stock sale. If you moved here from a high-tax state, the plan that made sense there probably needs a fresh look. That's a conversation we have a lot.

What This Covers

What Tax Planning Includes

A multi-year view, not just this April

Brackets, thresholds, and phase-outs interact across years, so a move that looks expensive this year can be the cheapest option across a decade. We plan against the run of years you're actually going to live through, not the one return sitting in front of us.

Where each investment lives

Two people can own the exact same funds and end up with very different after-tax results, depending on which account holds what and the order they draw from later. Asset location is one of the few things we control completely, so we pay a lot of attention to it.

Timing around the big events

A closing, a business sale, an equity exercise, or a bonus that dwarfs your salary concentrates a lot of income into one year. Before the event is the only time most of the options exist. Call us before you sign, not after.

Working with your CPA, not around them

Your accountant files the return, so the plan and the filing have to agree. We coordinate with the CPA you already have. If you don't have one, we know some great ones and we're happy to introduce you.

In Practice

How This Looks for the Clients We Serve

Commercial Real Estate Executives

Taxes come in many forms and can eat up your income over the long-haul if you’re not aware of where they’re coming from. Because you own a business, you should look at how your income is structured and how you’re maximizing the ability to defer income. We take pride in our awareness of the ever-changing tax code and how our client’s investments are taxed.

High-Income Families

As income grows, so does the potential for tax drag. We evaluate how your income is structured, coordinate with your CPA, and identify opportunities to reduce taxes now and in the future so more of what you earn supports your goals. We go beyond the 1040 and look at how trusts and other advanced techniques can help you reduce your taxes.

Frequently asked questions

Do you prepare my tax return?

No. Envision is a Registered Investment Advisor, not an accounting firm, and we don't prepare or file returns. Our job is the planning that happens before the return exists. Then we coordinate with whoever files for you so nothing gets lost between us.

Is a Roth conversion worth it at my income?

Sometimes. A conversion means paying tax now in exchange for tax-free growth later. It tends to make more sense when your current bracket is lower than the one you expect down the road, and when you can pay the tax from outside the account. A slow commission year or a gap between roles is often when it deserves a look. It's never a default move, and it's always a numbers conversation.

What does "going beyond the 1040" actually mean?

It means we're not just hunting for deductions on this year's return. We're looking at how your income is structured, whether your retirement plan is the right type for your situation, how your investments are taxed, and whether trusts or charitable strategies could play a role as your wealth grows. Nothing on this page is personalized tax advice. It's the starting point for a conversation with us and your CPA.
